In Loving Memory of Malcolm Edward Torrance

Malcolm Edward Torrance was a Political Science student and a committed Conservative Party activist. With one year remaining, he was working toward a degree in Political Science, with the goal of going to law school and working in government relations upon graduation. Malcolm had a strong passion for Canadian politics and greatly enjoyed the campaign trail as a tireless volunteer for the Conservative Party.
As the President of the Campus Conservatives, Canada's largest Conservative student association, Malcolm made a significant impact at the University of Calgary during his service in 2023-2025, a role which he started in his first year and continued onwards until his tragic and premature passing.
He worked determinedly with both the Conservative Party of Canada and United Conservative Party of Alberta in advocating for Conservative values on campus, hosting memorable networking opportunities for the Campus’ members, and planning excellent events across the city with MPs, MLAs, and more.
Malcolm was committed to ensure that students across the University of Calgary campus received access social events and opportunities across Alberta, got involved with provincial and federal political boards, met and mingled with elected officials from all levels of government, networked with movers and shakers in the city, and helped to spread a positive message on campus, whilst expanding their professional networks, and creating many opportunities for their post-academic lives.
But most importantly of all, Malcolm made an enormous difference in the lives of numerous people. Despite his unwavering and entrenched political beliefs, Malcolm’s network and friendships were vast and diverse, spanning individuals from all kinds of backgrounds and political ideologies. He gained the admiration of students across campus, even from those who disagreed with him, which spoke to his ability to build bridges between people. Malcolm proved that ideology never had to be a barrier between respect and kindness towards others, or towards relentlessly serving your community. He was a beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, and nephew.
When not in school or leading the Calgary Campus Conservatives or on the campaign trail, Malcolm enjoyed outdoor activities, spending time with his family and many friends, playing bagpipes and listening to music, as well as running his Aussie Collie in dog parks and travelling.
Malcolm will also be remembered for his quick wit, love of fun, incredible sense of humor and kindness. He lived his life courageously and fully and always stayed true to his values and convictions.
As an ongoing celebration of Malcolm’s life, an endowed scholarship will be established by his family and many friends and colleagues with the University of Calgary, called the Malcolm Torrance Award in Canadian Politics. This award supports continuing undergraduate students entering 3rd year or higher in the Faculty of Arts, majoring in Political Science or International Relations, focusing on Canadian Politics.
If the total amount received from all donors does not reach the endowment goal of $50,000 by December 31, 2027, the total received will be utilized to fund the award on an annual basis until the funds are completely depleted. The University is not obligated to return any portion of the gifts already received.
