In Memory of Ken Stephenson
Our university community mourns the loss of business leader and philanthropist Ken Stephenson. Ken passed away June 1, 2021 surrounded by family after a gallant fight with cancer. He was 87 years old.
Ken was a trailblazer, founding over 35 companies from the oil & gas, health care, real estate, development, farming, mining, pipeline construction and rail. He was also a visionary philanthropist and friend to the University of Calgary. Ken was a founding partner of CDL-Rockies in the Haskayne School of Business, but his greatest passion at the university was at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute.
Ken was the namesake and founding donor for the Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre. More than a donor, Ken remained actively involved from the establishment of the centre in 2005 until his passing.
Housed in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, the Stephenson Centre is a diagnostic facility dedicated to cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MRI), a medical imaging technology for the assessment of the cardiovascular system function and structure.
The Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre is among the most innovative clinical programs in Alberta, providing cardiac imaging services, training for researchers and physicians, and moving research from the lab into clinical care and practice. The centre performs approximately 4,000 MRIs each year. Studies show this test can predict sudden cardiac death, heart failure hospitalizations and identify changes in heart health related to cancer. This work, made possible through Ken’s contributions, are making a life-changing difference for Albertans and their families.
Family and friends remember Ken as a man with integrity, a brilliant mind and a huge heart. He was a beloved father and grandpa, whose lessons, values and legacy will live on through the family, friends, community and businesses he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that people please support the Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre.
