Honouring a Distinguished Career of Commitment and Service to the Faculty of Law
In November 2019, the Faculty of Law, colleagues from across campus, family and friends celebrated the retirement of Al Lucas at the Law School’s annual Night of Appreciation. To further celebrate and recognize Al’s tremendous leadership both within in the law school and the legal community, several of his former students have come together to create a scholarship in his honour. The Al Lucas Scholarship in Energy and Environmental Law will support a student in the Juris Doctor program whose focus of practice and study is energy and environmental law. The group is hoping that others who know Al and recognize all he has contributed over his illustrious 43 years of service to the Faculty of Law will consider making a donation towards this scholarship.
Al joined the University Of Calgary Faculty of Law in 1976 as a founding faculty member. During his 43 years of service, Al has held many roles in the faculty. He has served as Executive Director of the Canadian Institute of Resources Law, as Associate Dean (Research & Graduate Studies), and as Dean of Law from 2006 to 2011. Before joining the University of Calgary, he taught at the Faculty of Law, University of British Columbia from 1968 to 1976. He has been a consultant and policy advisor to several government departments and tribunals, and has held numerous professional appointments. Al was also an Adjunct Professor in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design, and until 2019, was Director of the University of Calgary's Sustainable Energy Development program, an interdisciplinary Master's program with the Haskayne School of Business, Schulich School of Engineering, and the faculties of Law and Environmental Design.
In honour of his retirement, a video was created.
