Knowledge of the menstrual cycle can be a powerful tool to monitor a woman’s general health. Now, with the help of new quantitative fertility monitors, women can measure estrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone from the comfort of home, by self-measuring these hormones in urine (rather than having to go for a blood test). Using these results, they can be empowered to know exactly what is happening daily with their menstrual cycle. These home monitors may be particularly helpful for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis, two common conditions each affecting ~10% of the population.
One of these new devices, the Mira monitor, is integrated with an accompanying smart-phone App. The present proposal involves the development of protocols to evaluate normal and abnormal patterns in the menstrual cycle utilizing the Mira Monitor hormone results, along with other biomarkers of the menstrual cycle (e.g. bleeding patterns) which will be tracked using an App designed specifically for the study.
Personalized tools for self-measurement of hormones and vital signs will empower women to better understand their menstrual cycles and give greater ability to distinguish normal cycles from abnormal cycles. This may lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment of conditions such PCOS or endometriosis, to improve menstrual health and overall wellbeing.
