Life on the Fast-Track
Kelly was born in Yorkton, SK and spent her childhood years on a small farm in Gorlitz, SK (near Yorkton). An accomplished student, Kelly finished high school at home a year earlier than her peers. She moved to Edmonton, AB at 17 where she worked as a data clerk with Alberta Health. Kelly attended the University of Alberta from 1986-1989, finishing her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics a semester early. After work as a registered dietician and Director of Dietetics in Vegreville, AB, she completed her Masters of Public Administration (with Honor’s List distinction) at Queen’s University. Following her graduation, she returned west and eventually took on the role of Director of Utilization on the Saskatoon Health District’s Board.
A Change in Career
Kelly enrolled in law school at the University of Calgary and became a much-loved member of the Law Class of 2001. She was a bright and kind person, who was well-liked and respected by all who knew her. Those who had the pleasure of going to school with her remember her many house parties (with her cats) and chats in the student lounge. She was one of the driving forces behind the legendary Whiteacre trips and always instrumental in bringing the class together. She was also a key part of the UofC Jessup moot team in her third year.
After graduation, Kelly articled and worked at Edy Dalton in Calgary. By 2016, she had moved her practice to Rowanoak Law in Sylvan Lake, AB, where she practiced until 2022. She also received her certification as mediator and served in that capacity from 2010-2022. Kelly was an active member in the various communities where she lived, including serving as Board Member for the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce and in various executive positions for the BNI Elite (Business Networking International) in Calgary from 2003-2013.
She was an accomplished lawyer, with a focus on family law and mentoring junior counsel. Her no-nonsense approach to life helped many clients and was an inspiration to many colleagues. Kelly was an incredible friend and will be missed terribly.
