Fairooz Shafin Memorial Award

To honour the memory of Fairooz Shafin, who passed away September 14 2023, aged 21, her family and those who had the privilege of knowing her would like to set up a scholarship in her name at the Faculty of Science in the University of Calgary, to support students who like her, are female international students in the Computer Science program who have completed their first year of studies.

Fairooz was a bright and talented young woman, dedicated to her studies and community, with an incredible work ethic. She had a passion for learning and showed remarkable growth and dedication in her work. She was strongly valued by her peers, recognized as an outstanding volunteer Community Outreach and Peer Support Team Helper with the University Women’s Resource Centre, and deeply involved with clubs such as the Competitive Programming Club and Women in Computer Science.

Just entering her third year of studies in Computer Science, she was starting to unlock her potential as an ambitious, dynamic young professional, and preparing to attend her first conference celebrating women in computer science. Her intelligence, kindness and caring left a lasting impression on all who knew her, and she will continue to make a difference in the lives of other students today.

Your generous donation to the Fairooz Shafin Memorial Award will directly impact the lives of female continuing undergraduate international students in the Faculty of Computer Science, providing crucial support as they pursue their degrees. Your contribution ensures that Fairooz's legacy endures, empowering and inspiring future generations of women in the field of computer science.

An endowment (minimum of $25,000 required to create) will generate interest yearly to support this award in perpetuity, carrying on Fairooz’s legacy.

Note: If by April 30, 2026, the total received from all donors does not reach $25,000 but exceeds $10,000, the funds will be utilized to fund the award on an annual basis until the funds are completely depleted. If the total amount received from all donors does not reach the endowment goal and cannot support the annual award, the contributions will be used to support the Computer Science Alumni Chapter Undergraduate Scholarship.

Please note the University shall not be required to return any portion of the gifts already paid.
