Dr. Anne Mahoney, Ph.D., F.CGPA, R.Psych, Clinical Psychologist and Certified TRE Provider, was a respected Clinical Psychologist and Mindfulness Meditation teacher in Calgary. A proud Maritimer, Dr. Anne Mahoney was a brilliant life-long learner. She started her university career in Halifax at Mt. St. Vincent University, graduating with a BSc (Honours in Psychology) in 1976, and completing her Masters and PhD in Psychology at the University of Calgary through the 1980s.
For many years Dr. Mahoney lived in Calgary, Alberta and later at her ranch in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains along the Wildcat Hills west of Cochrane. Besides managing her ranching operations, she maintained a fulltime clinical practice in Calgary, working with individuals, couples and groups where issues related to trauma limited a clients’ potential. Her focus was to help clients understand ways in which family of origin dynamics impacted their current life and her approach was to integrate mindfulness meditation into her clinical practice, when appropriate. She was in practice at the time of her passing in 2023.
Anne was also an Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) Mental Health Practitioner and offered on-site ranch work using equine therapy and other trauma release methods. She was trained in Reiki, Non-Violent Communication and many other modalities.
Beyond her clinical practice, Anne practiced and studied Theravada Buddhist meditation. She taught Mindfulness Meditation (Vipassana) and Loving Kindness Meditation (Metta) for over 30 years and led the Calgary Theravada Meditation Society for the past 20 years, offering bi-weekly meditation sittings and Dhamma talks. Anne also offered in-person and online study classes, workshops and intensive retreats locally, nationally and internationally. Anne was a wise and skilled teacher known for her expertise, clarity and depth of practice.
Dr. Mahoney was also distinguished lecturer and facilitator. She gave presentations and workshops nationally and internationally, and was welcomed by many Psychology departments, schools of Psychology, and Buddhist centres alike.
Anne made a huge difference in the lives of innumerable people. She was a much-loved grandmother, mother, sister, devoted daughter, niece and steadfast friend. Anne had 5 horses, 2 dogs and 1 cat. Her dogs were trained therapy dogs and her horses were used in equine therapy. Anne was honest, loyal, wise, cheerful and reliable; she lived life fearlessly and fully. Her curiosity, caring and delight at the goodness and worth of others made the world better.
As an ongoing celebration of Anne’s life, a endowed scholarship has been established with the University of Calgary, called the Dr. Anne Mahoney Graduate Scholarship in Clinical Psychology. This award supports students in the Faculty of Arts who are pursuing their graduate degrees in Clinical Psychology.
